Alma Guillermoprieto introduce la colección de artículos con una reseña de los impactos de la pandemia, illustrados con algunas anécdotas que serían cómicas si no fueran tan tristes, tales como la siguiente:
Pero un pueblo sitiado por la carencia y sin los mínimos niveles de educación no está para elegir a señores aburridos (o señoras) a sueldo que vayan a la oficina todas las mañanas a consultar con su equipo cómo resolver los problemas de su país de la manera más sensata posible. Ese pueblo quiere más bien líderes y salvadores, y elige a los Hugo Chávez, Daniel Ortega, Fernando Collor o Enrique Peña Nieto correspondientes. Con este último, por cierto, se notó una tendencia inquietante: ya no eran solo los electores los que no habían recibido una educación adecuada. Preguntado el entonces candidato Peña Nieto por corresponsales españoles sobre los tres libros que le habían significado algo en la vida, el candidato titubeó, escarbó en su memoria durante segundos eternos, y finalmente nombró “algunos pasajes de la Biblia”, algún otro que no recordaba, y un tercero cuyo título y autor equivocó.
Guillermprieto manifiesta un gran sentido de la humanidad en este artículo, que recalca el imenso catástrofe que ha ocurrido y que está ocurriendo en Latinoamérica, así como en todas las partes del mundo.

The Spanish newspaper El País , which is widely read not only in Spain but throughout Latin America, has just published an outstanding series of articles on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic throughout Latin America in general (introductory essay by Alma Guillermoprieto), and with specific articles on different aspects of its impact in El Salvador, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Mexico, and on the U.S.-Mexican border.

Guillermoprieto, commenting on the qualities of leaders chosen by peoples “besieged by deficiencies and shortfalls, and lacking minimal levels of education”, observes that electors don’t look for the best problem-solvers but rather for “Leaders and saviors” like Hugo Chávez (Venezuela), Daniel Ortega (Nicaragua), Fernando Collor (Brazil) or Enrique Peña Nieto (Mexico).
She illustrates her point with an anecdote that would be funny if it weren’t so sad:
With the last of these, Enrique Peña Nieto,to be sure, a disquieting tendancy was noted: it was not only the electors who had not received an adequate education. When Peña Nieto, then the candidate, was asked by Spanish correspondents about the three books which had meant something to him in his life, the candidate stammered, searched in his memory during seconds which seemed like an eterity, and finally listed “some passages from the Bible”, another (book) which he didn’t remember, and a third one whose title and author he got wrong.
Guillermoprieto evidences a great sense of humanity in this article, which highlights the immense catastrophe which has occurred and is occurring in Latin America, as has been the case in all parts of the world.
